About Ignite

Ignite got its start in Seattle in December, 2006, as a personal project of O'Reilly's Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis. They dreamed up an event where people could share their ideas over beer, and sent word out through their social network. On December 7, two hundred Seattle geeks looking for "a fun night of geekery and networking" squeezed into a bar on Capitol Hill. They found beer, but so much more. First up, a friendly but intense competition to build the sturdiest popsicle-stick bridge. Then 25 intrepid locals took a turn on the stage for their five-minute Ignite talks. The consensus was that it was a blast. Word got out, and other communities wanted Ignite in their cities. Brady and Bre turned the event over to O'Reilly, and nearly 250 Ignites have been held, about half of them in the past year. As Ignite entered its fourth year in 2010, O'Reilly launched Global Ignite Week to both celebrate and amplify the Ignite phenomenon. Many local Ignite events also stream live video during their events, via Ustream.tv

Ignite Hampton Roads

Speaker's Guide

Ignite Hampton Road - Speaker's Guide

The entire purpose of an Ignite presentation is to share something you are passionate about. Chances are, this has absolutely nothing to do with your job, profession or career. This is also not the place to try and “sell” anything. No infomercials, please.

  1. To get an idea of how other speakers have presented at Ignite, click here: http://igniteshow.com to watch some Ignite talks! We recommend you watch at least three of these to understand the audience! Also watch: http://igniteshow.com/videos/how-and-why-give-ignite-talk
  2. READ THIS: http://speakingaboutpresenting.com/content/fast-ignite-presentation/
  3. Pick strong stories and big themes. What do you love? What do you hate? What is the best advice anyone ever gave you? Pick stories with big themes, since they require less of an introduction. What are the 5 most important things to know about X that no one talks about? The stronger the topic and title, the easier the work is. Top 10 lists can work, but making 10 points is extremely hard – aim for 5 or 6.
  4. If you want to give a presentation related to your current professional field of expertise, here are some examples of “bad topics” and “good topics.”
    • Bad Topic: I work at the Waste Management Department and this is our marketing plan to get more people to start recycling.
    • Good Topic: The life-cycle of a soda can after you’ve finished drinking that diet citrus Fanta.
    • Bad Topic: I work as a motivational speaker and I will review the importance of setting goals in order to achieve success in your professional career.
    • Good Topic: Is goal-setting important? Let’s compare Richie Rich with Shaggy & Scooby Doo….
    • Bad Topic: I am a business consultant and I want to share the ten steps to starting a successful business.
    • Good Topic: Did you know that more “business”-related books were written last month than in the entire 1800s? Here’s why…
    • Bad Topic: I am an independent recruiter, and this is how you should act during an interview.
    • Good Topic: What was a job interview like in 1690? In 1740? In 1865? Did people use resumes? And did they dress any differently for a job interview?

  5. Please Rehearse. This is NOT “The Improv.” It takes an average of 8 hours to prepare for an effective presentation. People want to see you care enough to do your best. Don’t be nervous…Ignite audiences are enthusiastic and supportive and want to hear something cool and engaging. Most Ignite presenters are first-time speakers, so no professional speaking experience is required!
  6. Good slides support what you’re saying, not the other way around. Don’t get hung up on the slides. The last thing you want is to end up chasing your slides, a common problem at Ignite presentations - you’ll never catch up. Pick simple images and if you must use text, be sparse. No bullet lists, just one or two points. Make the slides flexible enough that if you fall behind it’s easy to skip something to catch up.

All speakers will have five minutes to present 20 slides. The slides will automatically advance every 15 seconds. Once you are introduced, it’s your stage for 5 minutes. There won’t be any last-minute surprises…you will have the opportunity to rehearse with the other speakers at the Ignite venue a few days before the actual event.

Finally:

  1. This is a community event, not a nightclub. PG-13 if you must.
  2. Nominated speakers and alternates will be notified via email. Acceptance of a nomination is a commitment to speak, please notify us if you can no longer attend.
  3. A DRAFT copy of your 20 slides is due no later than 3 weeks prior to event,
  4. Final copy is due 10 days prior to event.
  5. Failure to submit your 20 slides on time will force us to select an alternate speaker. (you become an alternate)

The most recent guidelines published on ignite-hr.org take precedence over all others.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail Rob Hegedus…he’s coordinating the presentations and can help: robhegedus@gmail.com

This is a well prepared ignite speaker...
